HAWAII
So far but so close to our hearts
Hawaii is an archipelago of eight major islands located in the Pacific Ocean. A favorite destination for newlyweds, Hawaii is amazing and will seduce everyone visiting there. Each Island is different and today we will take you to Oahu. Diamond Head crater
The Diamond Head crater is a dead volcano located at the end of Waikiki beach. It is now a park open to public. It is possible to climb up the hills. This hike can be tiring, but it is totally worth it since the view of Waikiki beach is incredible. On the lower part of the cliff, you will see the beautiful lighthouse; open for tours.
Downtown Honolulu
Downtown Honolulu has a nice blend of old and new buildings. Take your time to stroll this part of the city because there is a lot to see. The trees and gardens are beautiful, and you will want to visit the historical monuments. Although the island is small, its history is long, and it you will enjoy discovering it.
The Valley of the Temple
The valley of the temple is a unique concept. In the middle of the valley, all the different temples can be found: Buddhist, protestant, catholic and Shinto. The most beautiful is the Buddhist temple and its Zen garden. Walk around this park and don’t forget to bring a jacket, since it can get chilly.
Kailua
Kailua is an area with amazing beaches that are very quiet because they are protected by a coral Reef. Lanikai and Kailua beaches are great spot to rent a kayak and paddle to the islands. Pay attention to the water because you might see turtles, dolphins and tropical fish. If you come at the right time, you might be able to see whales on the horizon.
North Shore
The North Shore is very laid back; great spot for surfers and the younger crowd. The beaches on that side of the islands (Sunset, Ehukai, Banzai) have bigger waves. Shark Cove is a nice beach because it has little ponds with clear water, but to reach them you have to walk thru volcanic rocks.
The Polynesian cultural center is great for people wanting to learn about the island.
Waikiki Beach
Waikiki beach has been featured in many movies, making it a popular tourist attraction. It is beautiful because it’s a balance between nature and modernity. The beach side is very entertaining and the ocean is gorgeous. There are tons of restaurants and shops to pick from day and night. The International Market is the best place to buy souvenirs at a discount because prices are negotiable. The King Village is interesting; it looks like a miniature village of themed shops. At night, free classes of Hula are offered, which is a great opportunity to learn the culture.
Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay is a protected marine life area with limited access in order to preserve the ecosystem. If you do not get there early, you will have to wait in line so bring a hat, water and sunscreen. The entrance is $7.50 per person and you will be able to rent snorkeling equipment and fins. Once in the water, you will observe tons of colorful marine life. This is a great activity for ocean lovers. Kualoa Ranch
The ranch is a huge property, offering a wide range of activities and sceneries. Since this is private, you will have to buy a package and pick what you want to do: horseback riding, boat cruising, hiking, etc.. Many movies and television shows were filmed there such as Jurassic Park and Lost. It is pricey, but the day will be unforgettable; they are very well organized and those with no car can take a shuttle for an additional fee. Price range is from 20 dollars for a single activity to 135 dollars for a full day of fun. To see more go to www.kualoa.com. The tip corner
Go to Chinatown and discover different products like sea cucumber and fruits from Asia.
For the people interested in history, visit the naval base Pearl Harbor.
The bravest can have a close encounter with sharks. They will be in a cage in the open sea, allowing you to admire them from very close.
Rent a car and drive around the island; it is the best way to get to remote areas.
Ride the shuttle to your hotel instead of a cab; it will take a little longer but it will save you money.
Do a little research to find the best option when it comes to lodging. There are affordable deals, but you have to do your homework.

The Day-To-Day Life of a Model
Being a model is more than posing in front of a camera. It is a lifestyle, with a specific work schedule and routine to adopt. Modelixir offers the following advice to those seeking a successful career in modeling :
Stay healthy
A model should not be anorexic. Being thin does not mean starving yourself. We all have different body types and it is important to respect that. A healthy diet and regular work-out schedule is extremely important to your physical and mental well-being.
There was a time when modeling went hand in hand with drugs and alcohol. Fortunately, times have changed. A model is no longer expected to be present at after-parties. Many models never attend late events. Try to keep a regular schedule as much as possible. Adequate sleep is very important to staying in shape and beautiful.
It is understandably difficult to be constantly judged on your look, but unfortunately it is part of the job. Pay attention to comments and suggestions, but learn to keep only the best. Your agency and your family can be very helpful in keeping your head squarely on your shoulders.
Prepare
It is extremely important to prepare yourself for each casting and audition. It will make a significant difference and help you stand out among the other candidates.
For castings: research the client and the look you will be presenting. For example, one client may be interested in sports attire, while another may want to see you in an evening dress. Your agency should be able to give you the information you need, as they have already been in contact with the client and discussed the specific project.
For auditions: you must absolutely obtain a copy of the text you will be presenting. Practice your text until you feel comfortable. As you practice, experiment with different emotions and tones.
Always arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment. It will give you time to relax, adjust your makeup/hair and rehearse one last time. A successful model can be very busy, so invest in an appointment book or calendar. Keeping it up to date and organized will save you lots of trouble!
Meet Clients
Sometimes an agency will send you on a “go-see”. This is a meeting intended to introduce you to their regular clients. The client will check your book and take your comp card. As a result of this introduction, they might contact your agency to hire you for projects. Go-sees are not a waste of time; they are opportunities to be hired in the future.
Some clients might contact the agency with a request casting. This means you have been preselected and they want to see you in person. It does not mean you are hired!
Work for a client
If everything goes well, a model won’t spend her time running around chasing castings. She will be hired and work for clients. Some clients may require that you arrive with your hair and make-up ready. This allows the client to save time and money. When you arrive, be ready to shoot. Always bring a bag with makeup, brushes, hair styling tools, hair styling products, pins, etc. You should also bring your shoe bag to the shoot unless you are told otherwise. A shoe bag should contain around 10 pairs of shoes in neutral colors (black, white, silver) and different styles. You should have a variety, i.e. business shoes, evening shoes, etc. If you know the style of the shoot ahead of time you can plan to bring appropriate shoes. It is often the case that shoes are not provided on a shoot because they cannot be returned once used.At the end of a booking, a model should fill out their model voucher and have the client complete their portion. This is the proof that the job was done and the ticket to payment.
Update your portfolio
Before leaving a job, make sure you collect the photographer’s and the client’s contact information. Let them know that you would love to obtain a copy of the photo to add to your portfolio. It is better to get the picture directly from them because you won’t have to worry about tearing it out from a magazine or finding that the final result isn’t really useful for your portfolio. It’s always ideal to obtain an original. Inquire about when the pictures might be ready and follow up with an email once that date arrives.
If you are unable to reach the photographer and/or client, you still have the option to get the tear sheet from the magazine/brochure. You have to be extremely careful when you tear it. The best method is to break the magazine in two and then get to the page by tearing one at a time. It takes some time but is worth it because your portfolio requires photography with a clean edge. Practice beforehand to make sure you can get it right.
The more published photos you have, the better. Clients love to see that other people want to work with you. As you can see, working as a model is a demanding job. It is essential to be professional as you build a network and gain experience.

Rodrigo
VARELA
1. How and when did you become interested in photography? Describe your photography experience/education.
At age 15 my uncle gave me a camera and I started shooting racecars for fun, I then began to follow the racecar drivers and sell my pictures to them. Suddenly all my friends wanted me to take pictures of them. My cousin has a modeling agency so I also started shooting models for composites and my technique began to improve. When I moved to the US I went to Daytona Beach Community College for two years of classes. I had also had some basic courses in my country, Peru. After my graduation from DBCC I began working for many different photographers from different industries and learned different things from each of them.
2. What kind of camera do you use?
I use a Nikon D3 and a Nikon D700.
3. Besides your camera, what equipment/tools do you use most in your work?
Mostly I use pro photo equipment (flash) and tungsten light for weddings. 4. Describe your overall photography aesthetic or style.
I try to do clean pictures, sometimes dramatic or timeless. I think I am very classic, but a wedding should be classic, I try to shoot pictures that won’t become outdated.
5. What inspires your work (e.g., other photographers, nature, fashion, etc.)
When I look at other photographers’ work, I always pay attention to the illumination and the composition of the camera. Another source of inspiration is movies, I am constantly digging ideas.
6. What is your most striking memory as a photographer?
Shooting the birth of my kids was very memorable.
7. What is your favorite form of photography and why? What are some of your favorite subjects?
I really enjoy wedding photography; it’s a form of fashion and event combined. There is always something different and different personalities that you deal with. The rewards of shooting a wedding are stronger than just shooting a model.
8. In your opinion, what makes a good photo?
Something that expresses a mood or emotions.
9. Which qualities do you look for in a model? Are you hands-on or do you prefer to stay behind the camera?
The most important qualities are that she has a great personality, is confident and extremely charismatic. The best thing is that she/he has the right attitude. I give a lot of direction to my subjects.
10. What advice would you give to an aspiring photographer?
The most important thing is to shoot a lot and do different types of photography like I did. You should work with photographers from different fields and try to learn from them.
11. What are the most common photography mistakes, and what’s your advice on how to avoid them?
The most common mistake in beginner photographers is that they have terrible exposure; they shoot a lot in program mode so the camera decides what to do instead of them deciding how the pictures should be. The number one thing to avoid these mistakes is to practice, never stop practicing.
12. What are your views in photo editing? Describe your process.
Photo editing is very important because sometimes amazing pictures are not selected by the editor because the editor has a different point of view than the photographer, so a good editor has to have a similar background and education as the photographer. This is very important.
13. Which historical event would you have liked to shoot?
It would have been amazing to shoot the wedding of the year (Kate & William) I can imagine the pressure on the photographer for everything to be perfect.
14. How do you think the Internet has affected the photography industry? (i.e., online stores, industry-specific websites, forums, etc.)
The Internet is something great for photography. It allows you to share your work to different Medias, like in my case with my stock agency; sometimes I see my pictures all over the world. On the other hand it affects the industry because people can steal you images. This has not happened to me thankfully.
15. Which photographers do you look up to and why?
Yervant. He is one of the most creative wedding photographers. Mario Testino is a great fashion photographer.
Fabulous and Feminine Forties
The women of the 1940s era looked fabulous with their understated eye makeup, overstated round lips and perfectly coiffed hairstyles. Feminine flowers and sparkling pins accessorized the updos while shimmering shadows and flushed cheek colour gave their faces a naturally beautiful glow.
To achieve this glamorous look, start with a foundation base that is slightly darker than your own and set with a powder a shade lighter. This gives the impression that your natural radiance is shining through! Now brush on a shimmering pink blush to the cheeks and sweep towards the temples.
The eyebrows of the times are quite different than the over plucked arches of the 1930s. Natural fullness is in style and gives a more youthful frame to the 40s woman’s face. Fill in your brows with a brown shadow using an angled brush or a brown brow pencil.
Even though the eyes typically were understated, we don’t want to lose them either. Subtly enhance your peepers using a shimmering light bronze or grey shadow and apply to the crease of the lid. Highlight with a lighter shimmer and top off with 2 coats of dark brown or black mascara.
Now comes the most important step in keeping au courant to the times: The lips! Voluminous, rounded and red is the desired look. Apply your favorite crimson liner to both top and bottom, going outside your natural lip lines in the center, and stopping just short of your natural edges on the outsides. Then apply a matte finish lipstick as a glossy pout that won’t become popular for about 10 more years.
Now don’t be anxious about this hair! It looks harder than it is, I promise! After you have curled your locks with small hot rollers, simply pin up in any shape you desire. It helps to pump a few drops of smoothing serum into your hands before you style. Top off with a large flower clip or a set of sparkling pins on the side just at your temple.
Watch out Billy Holiday and Rita Hayworth, looks like there’s a new starlet in town!
Kisses from my taupe colored puckers,

Nicole

WHAT KIND OF LOVER ARE YOU? WHAT KIND OF
LOVER ARE YOU ?
Your score is
You have a maximum of A
You are the romantic lover.
When you have a boyfriend, your love is sweet and simple. You don’t like conflicts and try your best to make each moment spent together unforgettable. You write love letters and poems. You already picture yourself with kids and a house. Each time without him is painful but you forget all about it as soon as you are near him. Keep this desire to please him, it usually disappears as time goes. However do not forget to tell him what is important to you otherwise you take the risk of becoming frustrated and blowing up on him without warning.
You have a maximum of B
You are the indépendant lover.
For you, being in a couple does not mean to make a total abstraction of who you are. For you, to love is not to possess but share moments of life together. You can’t picture yourself being with him 24/7 even if you do love him. You would never cheat on him; this time apart is your ‘me time’. If your significant other understands and respect your needs, you will have a long and peaceful relationship. Not stressed at all, you take the time necessary and enjoy each step of the relationship.
You have a maximum of C
You are the controlling lover.
Your lack of self-confidence and trust in your partner make your relationship complicated. You are so scared to loose him that you barely let him breathe. Everything leads to an argument and no matter what he says you are always suspicious. He has been accepting this because he cares about you. However his patience has limits. Of course when someone is unhappy, he will be more likely to start looking somewhere else. Learn to let go and enjoy yourself without him. Being happy without him is not a betrayal; it brings more happiness to share once you are together. It is christmas year round with , Modelixir!

A Valentine’s Day amongst friends
I spent one year as a nanny near Boston. I had to leave my boyfriend back home. While I was taking evening classes in Harvard, I met a Mexican guy with whom I became friends. We talked often and he knew that my heart was already taken. Since Valentine’s Day was getting close, he suggested that we spend the evening together so we wouldn’t be alone. In the US, Valentine’s Day is not solely for couples; it applies to friends as well. So I decided to accept and go for a friendly diner together.
While on my way, he called me to let me know he had a little surprise for me. I did not plan a gift so I stopped by the nearest CVS to get him a small box of chocolates (whatever was left at that time). After we had ordered dinner, he took from under the table a Victoria’s secret bag. I cautiously opened the box fearing its contents. I was right… There it was; a bright red thong and a matching bra! I did not know how to react because cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings. It was my most embarrassing Valentine’s Day.
I later understood that he indeed wanted to be more than a friend.
No blizzard strong enough
On the 14th of February 2006, a snow blizzard hit my city. It would usually take my date 1 hour to come in fair weather so I suggested we reschedule but my date declined. The weather was bad and the snow was already a few feet high when my date arrived to pick me up. When I opened my front door, I was offered my first box of Godiva chocolates. We drove thru the storm to a nearby Fine French Cuisine restaurant that we had made a reservation for.
When we arrived, we were the only ones there. It looked like no other Valentines were as brave as mine. We were comfortably sitting in front of the fireplace and had ordered our meal when the waiter informed us that no alcohol was being served, but we could bring our own bottle. Despite the horrible weather, my date asked for the nearest liquor store and drove there so that we could enjoy some wine with our dinner.
As I waited for my date to return, I realized all the efforts that were put to make this evening so special. I was so touched that I almost cried. Someone cared so much for me to go out there and not let anything get in the way. This Valentine day rendezvous is the most memorable ever; despite the cold it had the warmest feelings.

Style of dress has always been and still is used to control women. Notably, this book discussed in detail the pain and agony of wearing a corset (no woman was a lady without one) such as, “Some of the short-term results of tight-lacing were shortness of breath, constipation, weakness, and a tendency to violent indigestion. Among the long-term effects were bent to fractured ribs, displacement of the liver, and uterine prolapse (in some cases, the uterus would be gradually forced, by the pressure of the corset, out through the vagina.)”

Why You Should Not Be Scared of Taking Risks
When you’re a child, one is very brave and adventurous. This is mostly because as a kid you are unable to assess the risks and consequences of your actions. The older you get, the more you learn from your mistakes and become satisfied with what you have. However, in life, if you do not try to reach for your dreams, you won’t realize them. If you do not have goals, you can’t evolve. Failure can be hard to swallow but this should not be your excuse to not believe in yourself.
I am a firm believer of the power of your mind and your intention. When we want something, we can get it. Of course, the idea is not to jump in with your eyes closed. A successful project has to be thought through. This thoughtful preparation is key in reducing unnecessary risks and in developing an exit strategy if necessary. If your dream is to become a singer, start by taking singing classes. Then look for shows you can be part of. Find inspiration in successful artist and start to dream of achieving the same or even more than they were able to accomplish. Learning an instrument and taking dance lessons will also give you an edge. The most successful artists did not become stars from one day to the other, for instance look at artists such as Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake…
The more we advance in life, the more we tend to get stuck in our routine and often we become a victim of this life. If there are areas in your life that do not bring you total satisfaction then you have to do something even if it scares you. Risks are everywhere, even when you cross the street. But you still cross the street right? Yes, because you have pedestrian crosswalk. So in life follow your dreams, find the safest path!
It is crucial that YOU believe in yourself and your achievements. You are writing your own story. So go for it and start the new chapter of your life. “You are beautiful, no matter what other may think or say!
Potiche Women Can Rule (Crystal Kolber)
On a flight coming back from Israel a couple of years ago, where I went to get in touch with my Jewish roots, I happened to be sitting next to a woman with a shaved head and a wig, better known as a sheitel. The lady and I engaged in a conversation where she lectured me on her view that women should cover themselves and should not be permitted to lead.
Conservative religious Jewish women, much like their Muslim counterparts cover their hair, some with a headscarf and some by shaving off all of their hair and replacing it with a wig. The theory is that a women’s hair is temptuous and should only be seen by her husband, therefore, it must be covered. In patriarchal cultures and religions, men are permitted hair styles, rights, and many other accoutrements that women are denied. On the flip side, women in more egalitarian cultures experience over-sexualized rigid standards of beauty.
Recently in Israel, an 8 year old girl on her way to school has become a target of ridicule. The ultra-Orthodox wielded stones at her and called her a “whore” for her immodest dress—an 8 year old! They have even gone so far as to demand that women sit in the back of buses. Secularism is the best strategy because we coexist in different schools of thought and a balanced treatment of women is crucial. The line must be drawn.
“To lead?” I asked with agitation. She believed that harmony can only be found when a woman keeps to her home and occupies her time by serving her husband and family. I have no problem catering to my husband and children, but I expect my husband to serve me equally. I explained to her that Queen Elizabeth I was one the greatest rulers of all time. As a direct result of her flourishing reign, England entered into a period known as The Golden Age. For once, when a woman ruled, there was peace, harmony, religious tolerance, artistic expansion, and enough for everyone to eat contributing to an overall more positive quality of life. I have read the Queen’s biography and the one trait that stood out the most about her was the mental anguish that she would go through when she had to send troops to war or when she had her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots, executed after Mary plotted to have her assassinated on numerous occasions. She would have bouts of hysteria over these matters and it would take her weeks to sign the orders. A person’s life was precious to her.
It is not that women should replace men; it is that there should be an equitable distribution of women in political office, upper-level management of companies and on the boards of companies. It is a strong notion that if more women are in political office, there will be less war. If more women are on the boards of companies, there will be less corruption and greed in The United States. It starts with women being treated equal in dress and their right to rule.
Queen Cleopatra of Egypt, Queen Esther of Persia, Queen Elizabeth I, Prime Minister Gold Meir of Israel, Queen Rania of Jordan, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, President Christina Fernandez de Kricher of Argentina, former President of Chile and the current Executive Director of the UN Women Michelle Bachelet, Prime Minister Julia Gillard of Australia, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, COO of Facebook Sheryl Sandberg just to name a few in the long list of women to be admired for leading. Steamed Salmon with Apple Cream Sauce
Ingredients for 2 persons
2 pieces of salmon (6 oz each), 2 apples type golden or granny, 7/8 C. (or ¾ cup plus two tablespoons) of apple juice, 3 tablespoons of calvados or any apple-based alcohol, 7 oz of sour cream, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 3/4cup of white wine like sauvignon, 1 shallot, Butter, Salt and pepper
For the “sauce” :
Cut the shallot into thin slices and combine with the apple juice, one tablespoon of brown sugar and white wine. Cook and let reduce until you only have the equivalent of 4 tablespoons of sauce. Set aside.
Prepare the apples:
Cut the apple in pieces and cook them in butter and sugar until they get a nice golden color. Singe with the calvados alcohol, remove from pan and set aside.
Finish the sauce:
In the same pan you prepared the apples (do not clean, this will incorporate the apple flavor) combine the “sauce” mixture, sour cream and butter. Heat until evaporates (thickens). Add salt and pepper (pinch to taste).
Prepare the salmon:
Steam the salmon on the side to preserve its taste. If you prefer, you can fry it in olive oil.
Presentation:
Mound half of the apple mixture on each plate (you can warm it up a little in the microwave first).
Pour the sauce mixture on the spot where the salmon will be displayed.
Place the salmon on top of the sauce.
Add a stalk of tarragon for decoration

Eco-design For a Cause by U.S./Ukraine Foundation: Helping Ukrainian Orphans
Eco-design for a Cause is a movement adopted by fashion designers all over the world in places such as India, Russia, Ukraine, France and the United States, benefiting Ukrainian children. The movement included fashion designers and celebrities who collaborated to create masterpieces from donated celebrity memorabilia that were sold at a silent auction held on the 1st of December 2011 in Washington, DC with proceeds going to Ukraine’s orphans.
A large number of fashion designers are leading the movement initiated by the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, a leading non-government organization, promoting democracy, freedom of speech and charity in the U.S. and Ukraine.
Eco-design for a Cause is part of a broader project devoted to raising social awareness and environmental responsibility around the globe. Eco-fashion is a movement creating a sustainable type of clothing in a socially and environmentally conscious manner.
In the past year, the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, based in Washington DC, gathered ties, scarves, jewelry, and memorabilia donated by U.S. celebrities including former U.S. presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
The participating designers used the donated memorabilia creating masterpieces that were sold at a silent auction during the Gala Celebration marking the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence in Washington, D.C. The celebration took place at the Omni Shoreham Hotel on Dec. 1, 2011.
Indu Arora, Violetta Vieux, Vasily Vein, Zinaida Likhacheva, Helen Yarmak, Alex Soldier, and Marianne Faulkner were among a group of participating fashion designers, who had 3 months to create their designs of clothing, accessories, or purses from the donated ties, scarves and jewelry. Some of the designers, including Alex Soldier and Vasily Vein, donated their items to the silent auction.
Violetta Vieux, a San Francisco wedding dresses designer at Viogemini (www.viogemini.com), said: “I want to help orphans so that they can have the opportunity to find love and care. I want them to know that somewhere across the seas and oceans there are people who think of them and want to help. Nothing can replace parents, but kids still need to know that they are not alone.” Violetta created a beautiful dress out of George W. Bush ties.
Vasily Vein said: “I really liked the idea of using my talents to help Ukraine’s children. I think that the best way to improve their lives is giving them hope and helping them discover their talents. There are over 11,000 pre-school age orphans in Ukraine. Can you imagine how many future artists, painters, and designers are among them?” Vasily’s hat surprised everybody with its innovative design and was sold at the very beginning of the auction along with Marianne Faulkner’s skirt.
In an effort to make the best use of the collected funds, the U.S.-Ukraine foundation conducted an extensive survey. After weeks of discussions, they decided to invest the gathered funds in promoting Ukraine’s liberal arts projects.
It doesn’t matter where you live – in Ukraine, United States or France. Humanity, care, love, and concern for children and their future is what unites us, building bridges between the philanthropic world of fashion and Ukraine’s most in need. We strongly believe that sustainable fashion will benefit the entire globe and will aid those little souls thousands of miles away who hope and pray for a better life.
