NEW YORK CITY
Manhattan: How do you keep your feet on the ground when your head is in the clouds?
New York city is the symbol of the United States: big, diverse, crowded and super busy. A trip to NYC is always interesting, and you will enjoy being part of the Big Apple people. We will focus on Manhattan. Central Park
Central Park is among the most famous parks in the world since it has been featured many times in movies and shows. It is a very pleasant park with a lot of hidden treasures and funny situations. Where else would you see a priest teaching rollerblading to nuns?
In winter, an outdoor ice rink is installed. During summer, the grass is the perfect spot to get some sun and picnic. For the romantic ones, a horse carriage takes you for a ride no matter the weather. Inside the park, you will find a very nice zoo, historical monuments and for the athletes, a pool, baseball diamond and tennis court. Central Park is the Mecca of the active people; you can spend the whole day there easily.
Midtown
In Midtown, you will find the highest buildings such as the Empire State building, from where you will have an amazing view of Manhattan. Times Square is in the same area; its colorful neon will hypnotize you. Don’t miss the Toys R Us store; it is unique. You will find Lego sculptures, a giant wheel, an animated dinosaur and many more surprises! Madame Tussauds Museum is around the corner and is worth the visit. Don’t miss Rockerfeller Center and its golden statue. In December the giant Christmas tree is illuminated. You can go up the building to the 70th floor for another gorgeous view.
For people interested in history, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and Grand Central station are a must-see.
The Statue of Liberty and Staten Island
Going to NYC without seeing the Statue of Liberty is like going to France without eating any bread. For those with a tight budget, you can ride the Staten Island Ferry that leaves from the south of Manhattan for free. You will have a very nice view of the city and the statue (although not that close). For the ones that want to see that statue closer, you will have to purchase a tour. This includes “Ellis Island’ where immigrants where first brought in before they could enter the territory.
Chinatown
Chinatown gives you a totally new perspective on New York. The smells and Chinese signs will take you to Asia. The best part of this is the atmosphere. There are a lot of stores selling counterfeit products. They are always checking if the police are around, and sometimes you have to go to a hidden room to see their merchandise. Don’t buy anything; this is not socially responsible.
Soho
Soho is the neighborhood for Fashionistas and people looking for unique clothing and things to decorate their houses. You will have a large range of designers to pick from, but it can be a little pricey. Soho has an architecture often found in movies with the outside ladders and brick buildings. The zone has been renovated and it is a nice area to walk around if you don’t plan to shop.
Financial district
Wall Street is often seen as ruling the world. You will see the famous statue of a bull, symbolizing strength and power. Before the 9/11 attacks, the World Trade Center towers were there. Today you will find a commemorative monument in construction.
South Street Seaport is a commercial zone located on the border of the ocean. It is unique because the old red brick buildings have been renovated into stores and restaurants. It gives a small village feeling even though the financial district buildings are in the background. The tip corner

Modeling may be your passion, but it is also a business. To be successful, you will need to know how the business of modeling works. This article will be useful for those wanting to be a professional model, read it carefully.
Do I need a manager?
In the modeling industry, a manager is not necessary if you have the time and energy to seek representation yourself. A manager may know a lot of people in the industry, but realize that you will have to pay a commission to your manager for each job you take.
If you hire a manager, and your manager is able to find you an agency, you will have to pay 20% commission to your agency and additional commission to your manager. That will not leave you with much in the end!
Unless the market is highly competitive, look for agencies yourself.
What is a freelance?
Working as a freelance model is possible if your market is very specific and agencies do not usually represent your peers. For example, if you are tattooed or have an eccentric look, you can expect to find job by yourself. If you are easy to work with and your pictures are awesome, you will be referred and able to work on a regular basis.
If your look is more typical, try to obtain the contact information of the artistic director of a brand. You can try local designers and boutiques that might be happy to have a free spirit eager to succeed, much like them. Also, check online to find offers near you.
Be very careful when booking directly with a client; do not put yourself in a dangerous situation. Make sure to ask for a deposit before the shoot to make sure you will be paid. Search for template contracts to review or use.
Always market yourself
Modelixir is a great way to maintain an online gallery and references from people you have worked with. It gives you credibility as a model, but you should also have additional marketing tools: your comp card and portfolio.
Whether or not you are agency represented, you need to update these materials on a regular basis. You are not the only beautiful person out there! Clients want to see that you can deliver great pictures. You have to be persistent and pro-active to make things happen. It won’t come to you without effort, your agency will be there to help but ultimately you will do the job!
If you don’t get pictures from your bookings, then do some test shots with local photographers looking to expand their portfolios (just like you!). It will be TFP or TFCD (Time For picture or Time for CD). Stick with a natural look so that clients see the real you.
What about money?
When you are agency represented you are not involved in the salary negotiation. The agency and the client discuss multiple criteria to determine the amount of usage of the shoot. They will consider how the image is going to be used - in a magazine, locally, internationally, etc. Basically, they need to know the exposure of the picture to assess how much money you should make.
Sometimes, the pay is hourly and ranges anywhere from $150 to $250 per hour. You may be eligible for a bonus if you are on a package. Jackpot if the contract is exclusive!
Beware that your paycheck may take a while to arrive in the mail. Follow up to know how long you should wait. If you do not have another job on the side, you have to be smart about spending your money. Learn to budget until you get bookings on a regular basis.
Being a model requires dedication, intelligence and professionalism. Some investments are necessary to stand out in the crowd but you won’t regret them. Modelixir is offering you multiple tools to be successful, don’t hesitate to check them out!
Interview Of A Portrait Photographer
Don’t base your judgment of this photographer’s professionalism and talent on his age!Behind his laid back attitude is a photographer who would go extra steps to deliver the best image.
His kindness and amazing way to work with light got him noticed in a short amount of time.
He works has a freelancer for many magazines, newspapers, and advertising agencies.
Let’s have a coffee and talk with Joshua Dahl, our portrait photographer.
Joshua
DAHL
1. How and when did you become interested in photography? Describe your photography experience/education.
II first became interested in photography in May of 2008, soon after I graduated high school. I received a DSLR camera for my 18th birthday because I wanted to take some nice photos of my car at the time. It was later on that I decided people were my favorite subjects to photograph; I ended up replacing my car with an SUV in order to carry all of my gear. In short, it was my love of cars that got me into photography and my love of photography that got me out of cars!
I tried going to the local community college but I couldn’t keep my head in it because I was so focused on photography. I ended up dropping out… twice. I decided to enroll in a Photography Certificate Program at the University of South Alabama in September of 2009 and I finished the program in May of 2010.
In this short time, I have shot for almost all of the local newspapers, weekly and daily, as well as many local magazines. I have also built up a great commercial client list and pick up many portrait jobs as well. 2. What kind of camera do you use?
My primary camera is a Canon 1D Mark III, with a collection of Canon L Series lenses and Canon Speedlites.
3. Besides your camera, what equipment/tools do you use most in your work?
I have three Alien Bee AB1600’s strobes with a Vagabond II battery pack to use on location. I mainly use Octaboxes and Stripboxes, but I also have a Beauty Dish, spot grids, and grids for the boxes.
4. Describe your overall photography aesthetic or style.
I would say my style could be called Commercial Portraiture, due to my very modern style of shooting. Using studio strobes on location is what many commercial photographers do but I bring this to my portrait clients as well.
5. What inspires your work (e.g., other photographers, nature, fashion, etc.)
I find inspiration everywhere. I’ll see a location that I like and I’ll think of a concept that would work there or I may see a scene in a movie or TV show that I’d want to recreate, it’s really endless.
6. What is your most striking memory as a photographer?
I can’t really pinpoint just one memory as a photographer that stands out. Everyday that I’m shooting, I’m making new memories.
7. What is your favorite form of photography and why? What are some of your favorite subjects?
I love location portraits. In my opinion the location is just as, if not more, important than the subject that’s in it. They must work together of course, but the location is what really tells the story. My favorite subjects are people. I enjoying capturing their true personality or sometimes even portraying them as something else. The creativity can be endless.
8. In your opinion, what makes a good photo?
Composition and color are the first two things that stick out to me in a good photo. Bright colors will always draw a viewer in even if it is not a technically good photo. The rules can be broken if they are other strong points to make up for it.
 9. Which qualities do you look for in a model? Are you hands-on or do you prefer to stay behind the camera?
I choose models for different reasons for different shoots. I don’t ever look for a particular quality in a model. I like to be hands on with my shoots and help from start to finish. I’m the first one there and the last one to leave. I’m involved in concept, wardrobe, make-up, posing, shooting, editing, and delivering.
10. What advice would you give to an aspiring photographer?
When I was first getting started a lot of seasoned photographers wouldn’t want to help me because I was young and had a nice camera. It was a little discouraging at first but it made me try even harder because I wanted to prove to all those people that I knew what I was doing. Now those same people are calling me asking me for help, and I don’t mind. Because I enjoying sharing my knowledge with other photographers, whether they are just getting started or have been shooting for 20 years. So my bit of advice would be, don’t ever let anyone get you down, just keep shooting.
11. What are the most common photography mistakes, and what’s your advice on how to avoid them?
I think a really common photography mistake is if you don’t like the way it looks, don’t keep shooting it. That’s something that I always told myself and I think it’s carried me a long way. If I wasn’t happy with the result I was getting, I would change it until I liked it rather than just keep shooting because it was there. Your clients would rather you take an extra 30 minutes to get the right shot than for you to cut corners and give them a product that’s half as good as it should be.
12. What are your views in photo editing? Describe your process.
I keep my photo editing to a minimum. Most of my “pop” and results are due to my flash techniques. I do a lot of my editing in Camera Raw in Photoshop and then really just keep it to basic adjustments and retouching. When I first got into portraiture and using lighting, I didn’t use Photoshop much at all and it really helped me fine-tune my style with out relying on anything else. So when I started using Photoshop more, it was only to enhance what I had already created, not fix it.
13. Which historical event would you have liked to shoot?
I don’t know if there is a specific historic event that I would have liked to shoot, but maybe a historical icon. I would have loved doing a photo shoot of Michael Jackson, because he changed the world with his music and he was such an icon for years and still is.

 14. How do you think the Internet has affected the photography industry? (i.e., online stores, industry-specific websites, forums, etc.)
The Internet has done a lot for the photography world. It’s helped it and hurt it. Because of the Internet, there has been a huge increase in how many people have picked up a camera. It has definitely made it a lot tougher to get your work noticed among the other thousands of photographers out there, but it’s such a useful tool to showcase your work that it’s a key element in the process.
15. Which photographers do you look up to and why?
I look up to many photographers; some of them better known than others. I look up to the industry leaders like Chase Jarvis and Joe McNally because of how much they give back to upcoming photographers by having blogs, online workshops, books, etc. making it easy to get the information that would normally be tough to obtain. Another big influence is Joey L. because he is so young and shooting massive campaigns for companies. He really proves that age isn’t an issue. Holiday!
Celebrate!
The holiday season is here again. Through all the shopping for presents, preparing for family to visit and the general craziness of this time of year, we have one more thing to look forward to…. Holiday Parties! These are the fun times when we can get together with our friends or co-workers and not worry about cleaning and shopping and menu planning. We focus on whether to have a peppermint martini or some egg nog. You might also be wondering what is in style for your festive holiday hair and makeup look! Now is the time to dazzle!!
Begin your makeup by using a moisturizing foundation, a flushed color blush and a highlighter to create that holiday glow on your cheekbones. On your eyelids use a shimmering golden shadow. The more shimmer the better! With black eyeliner, follow from the top inside corner to the edge, but don’t stop there! Just a little flick off the ends gives a sexy and flirty style. For under the eye, follow the inside ledge also called the “water-line”. Using the same shimmering shadow you used for your lids, highlight the inside corners, or tear ducts, as well as the inside corner underneath your bottom lashes. Now that your eyes are popping, create a little contour in the crease with a soft brown color. Finish the eyes by creating a great brow. This is the time for some defined arches! The best way to do this is to use a medium brown shadow and an angled brush. If you prefer a brown pencil, make sure it is very sharp.
The most fun part of our holiday look is the bold red lips. My favorite color for this season is charred red in matte finish by MAC. It is also a long wear so it stays on through all your little smooches under the mistletoe ;)
For your hair use a flat iron over your whole head. Add a few drops of Bio-oil to get the smooth and healthy glow. Secure a ponytail high in the back and twist into a sleek bun. Not only is this style classic and sophisticated, it is also back and out of your way! No hair will fall in your face and get stuck to your lipstick. You know what I’m talking about! Then you go to get it out and you get this streak of red lipstick across your cheek…. really embarrassing when you have been talking to that cute guy from work!
Now all that is left is to put on your hottest diamond earrings, sequin party dress, some sexy heels and dazzle the room with your gorgeous holiday makeover!
Kisses from my taupe colored puckers,
Your favorite Makeup and Hair Guru,Nicole

Each year, the same story happens. You do not know what to get to your friends, acquaintances or family in law. Here is a list of ideas that are not too costly and are excellent back up plans when you run out of time or originality.
Soaps and body cream
When buying a gift for a female, there is no going wrong with a gift basket. If she does not use it now, she can use it later, and every women is keen of body care. Just make sure you don’t give this to her every year or she might take it the wrong way!
Fashion Jewelry
Very affordable, you can get a whole set. Make sure the jewelry is nickel free since a lot of people are allergic. Observe what your friends wear and stay in the same style. No need to innovate. The more you innovate the more likely the gift will stay in the box.
Scarf and other accessories (bags, gloves, soft socks…)
For winter or for style, scarves and accessories are awesome gift ideas. You never get enough of those. Before buying it, make sure you get something that your friend would wear, check their style. Is it classic? Colorful? You are not buying for yourself so stick to what you know!
Bake some cakes and biscuits
This gift is nice when you are on a budget but it takes some time. You can bake some cookies with holiday shapes and wrap them in a nice paper. Everybody loves food and even if it is not expensive, they will surely appreciate the time you spent making them.
A basket with green products
Are you environmentally friendly? Do you care about the Earth and health? I think there is no better ways to switch people’s habits than by getting them couple of green products. It will show them than cleanliness can be harmless. Shopping bags
More and more stores are encouraging to use your own bags to pack your groceries. A great way to fight plastic bags is offering a couple of reusable bags. It is very convenient and you can find some really nice ones.
A gift card
A gift card is great when you know what store the person likes to go to. The bad side is that they will know how much you actually spent. I like it when the person thinks I spent much more than what it was actually worth so a gift card is tricky!
A CD, DVD or card to download
For people using MP3 players and always looking for new sounds, a gift card from online store such as ITunes is great. They will be able to get what they want very easily. If your friend is old fashion, a CD or DVD can be good. You can pick the theme, it does not have to be a movie, it can be about yoga or aerobic classes for instance.
A subscription to a magazine
Magazines are expensive when you want to buy them at the cashier but if you buy online you can find huge bargains! If the person is into a something specific like photography, health, fashion… getting a subscription is great and it will remind him/her of you every month.
A groupon coupon
It can be groupon, living social or any of these websites. You can either buy a deal or get them a gift card. It is up to you but one thing is sure, you can get unbeatable offers. Massages, facials, activities sold at a discount in your area and purchasable online; what else can you ask for?
These ideas can seem clichés but unless you know the person very well, you do not want to go off the road. It would be a very awkward moment. And if worse comes to worse, they can re-gift your present. I know it sounds awful but it is a great way to recycle and the most important thing is to make someone happy, isn’t it?

Why Should you Perform a Body Detox ?
The amount of toxins in the body are increasing at an alarming rate. Obviously, toxins are bad for you, as can be seen as more and more people suffer from cancer, heart diseases, obesity, headaches, fatigue, and allergies.
Toxins can be found both inside the body and outside of it. Food contains toxins because of the pesticides and added chemicals. The environment is also polluted, therefore we end up absorbing toxins when we eat, breathe and touch our surroundings.
The body produces toxins on a daily basis. The sweat from your body as well as regular digestion are key in eliminating unwanted toxins. When the body is overloaded with toxins it has a tendency to shut down and become weak and sensitive to bacteria, mycosis and parasites.
To be in better shape, it is important to cleanse the body. How long you want to go for and how deep you want to clean depends entirely on you. In fact, simple changes such as daily consumption of vegetables and food rich in fiber can be a great way to purify your body.
Fasting is also an option. A detox gives a break to your body for a period of time. Hippocrates thought that the body needed physical and chemical rests. Not eating certain foods helps the body get rid of impurities and accumulated waste. It is like a deep cleaning. Be careful not to start fasting before asking your physician’s opinion. This option can sometimes have a dramatic result on your health, but you also do not want to overdo it.
Potiche A Brief History of Women’s Torture
Crystal Kolber
I recently finished reading For Her Own Good : 150 Years of the Experts’ Advice to Women by Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English, a book that I highly recommend. It is a synopsis of women and the medical industry and how for most of the 1800s women’s ovaries were routinely removed, cauterized, and poked at. Women were thought to have suffered from medical conditions known as invalidism, neurasthenia, and hysteria. Conditions that we now know are no more real than the tooth fairy. In short, women were bored out of their minds and going mentally insane from their controlled non-stimulating existence. In order to maintain their health, women had to become as domesticated and docile as possible and never under any circumstances attempt anything intellectual. It is uplifting to know that in some parts of the world women have achieved exactly the opposite of what the doctor ordered.
Style of dress has always been and still is used to control women. Notably, this book discussed in detail the pain and agony of wearing a corset (no woman was a lady without one) such as, “Some of the short-term results of tight-lacing were shortness of breath, constipation, weakness, and a tendency to violent indigestion. Among the long-term effects were bent to fractured ribs, displacement of the liver, and uterine prolapse (in some cases, the uterus would be gradually forced, by the pressure of the corset, out through the vagina.)”
If you are any sort of decent person, then you will find the last line as disturbing as I did. Out of sheer disgust and principle that line has had me pondering: What are we as women currently doing to uphold such horrible practices in the name of beauty? Aside from female genital mutilation that is practiced in 28 countries, in the modern civilized world, women still engage in beauty rituals that are relatively uncivil. Coco Channel singlehandedly revolutionized the way women dressed by unlacing the corsets and slipping women into simple yet stylish clothes. If she were alive today, I would love to ask her what her thoughts on breast implants are. I am sure her answer would be, “Ils sont miserables pour les femmes.” I couldn’t agree with her more. My best friend whispered to me at dinner the other night,” Crys, I just can’t wear my Giuseppe’s anymore. They are breaking my toenails.” It does not matter if your shoes costs $20 or $500, they all hurt the same, but beauty is pain we really believe. I will admit that I can be a slave to fashion. I have an inner struggle with fashion. I appreciate the artistic and creative elements to beautiful clothes and shoes, but sometimes I long for the days when women languidly laid around eating grapes in togas and a snake arm bracelet and called it a day.
Shoes I am less inclined to get angry about, but a fake chest really strikes a nerve with me. I steadfastly believe that plastic surgery has reached outlandish proportions. Corsets, breast implants, bound feet (whether today or in ancient China) are all designed to attract men. We no longer live in a society where men control our choices, but subconsciously we still hold tight to men’s inclinations because we as women still seek the approval of men. A couple of years ago I cut my hair in a style known as the Pageboy-- a chin length bob with short bangs. I was with a guy that I really liked and he informed me that my hair was short. “You probably won’t like it because most guys prefer long hair,” I explained. “Then why did you do it?” he asked. “Because, I do what I like.”

Step 1: Start in a basic push up position with your hands on a bench, workout ball or chair. Holding this position while flexing your abs and lower back trains your core area.
Step 2: Lift your right leg in the air parallel to the floor by flexing your hamstrings and butt muscles.
Step 3: Pull the right knee to the chest while flexing your abs and maintaining balance on your left leg.

Alfred Kendrick Interview with Sons of Anarchy star, and non-profit
organization volunteer and supporter, Kristen Renton
In my line of work I get the chance to meet so many different people from the everyday bride to the fabulous stars in your favorite TV shows and magazines. On one shoot, I was so lucky to meet Kristen Renton, one of the stars from Sons of Anarchy on FX and Strictly Sexual on Hulu. Since then, we have had a chance to work together a few times on photo shoots as well as a fun weekend sharing a hotel room at a motorcycle show. We had tons of fun! So when I was asked about which non-profit organization we could feature this month, I immediately remembered the stories I have heard from Kristen about her work with Boxer Rescue LA or BRLA.
N- Kristen, you play a porn star named Ima on the hit FX show Sons of Anarchy. Ima causes all kinds of drama and is such a bad girl! But in real life you are one of the nicest people I have worked with. I love that you use your fame to help support these great organizations like BRLA. What got you into boxer rescue in the first place?
K- First of all, thank you for the kind words!
You are so sweet! I was introduced to Boxer LA when my ex fiancé and I were looking to adopt a dog. We had decided we wanted a boxer, and after looking in our local shelters, we were told to try BRLA. The minute we arrived at BRLA, I knew my life would never be the same. I had fallen in love… not only with the dogs, but with the entire rescue group. I loved the passion all the volunteers had for saving the dogs, and how appreciative the dogs were for just a few minutes outside with the volunteers. I began volunteering almost every weekend. I couldn’t stay away. I love going in early Sunday mornings and washing all the water bowls, feeding the dogs, and even shoveling poo! It makes me feel like I am helping all the dogs that are still stuck in the shelter to feel loved, and let them know they aren’t forgotten. I want to adopt them all myself, but in a one bedroom apartment, that doesn’t realistically work!
N- Hahaha, no it doesn’t! Can you tell us a bit more about BRLA? How they got started and the work they do for these great animals?
K- Boxer Rescue LA was founded by Ursula Sauthier. Over 3 decades ago it was one woman saving one dog at a time. Fast forward to today and BRLA maintains a full time kennel housing nearly 100 Boxers and finds adopted homes for over 700 boxers annually. An army of dedicated BRLA volunteers devote themselves to helping boxers in need get the help they require and have a safe, temporary home until adopted. BRLA has experienced adoption counselors and trainers working with potential adopters to ensure the perfect fit and match for every home and lifestyle looking for a boxer.
N- I know you do things like auctioning signed photos of yourself and the rest of the SOA cast, to help raise money and awareness for BRLA. What other types of things do you do to help?
K- I never stop promoting BRLA. Every chance I get I talk about Boxer Rescue LA and am continually fundraising for this wonderful cause. Whether it is on a red carpet, or just dog lovers I meet on the street, I am always trying to raise awareness about our shelter. Our rescue survives purely on donations, so it is imperative that we continually receive support. One way we raise money is through a wonderful fundraiser called “Woof & Wine.” This is a great event we put together every year with a wine tasting, silent auction, music, raffles, ect. This year I hosted it along with my good friend Kaya Jones (formally of the Pussycat Dolls). Woof & Wine brings together so many amazing people for such a great cause. It is an evening I look forward to all year.
N- It sounds like you put a lot of time into volunteering even though you are such a busy girl with your acting career. What motivates you keep up with it on days when you are exhausted from being on set and traveling?
K- One Sunday morning I arrived at BRLA and began washing dishes. That is when I noticed him, a very striking, very LARGE boxer in a run right next to the sink. He was in the run with his girlfriend, Matilda. His name was Kaiser, and I immediately fell madly in love with him. He was old and grey, was missing one ear, had scars all over his face, but he was the most beautiful dog I had ever seen. His scars told a story of a rough life, and here he was in his twilight years, stuck in a shelter. It just broke my heart. I made it my mission to get him adopted. I would take him out and parade him around, post his picture on my Facebook page, and tell anyone who would listen all about him. He was such a sweet boy; all he wanted was to curl up in your lap and cuddle. You could tell he was just a big, and I mean BIG,
baby. Eventually Matilda got adopted, but poor Kaiser was still stuck in the shelter, waiting for his forever family to come and rescue him…
Finally, his (well, really my) prayers were answered. A very sweet couple decided to foster Kaiser, until someone could adopt him. Well, we all know the ending to that scenario. .. Yes, the couple ended up adopting Kaiser themselves! He went camping with them, took trips to the park, and had lots of love and attention. From what I hear he was quite the couch potato!
Kaiser lived out his final months in a loving home, surrounded by warmth and kisses. I will never forget the strong, silent, beautiful Kaiser. He is the reason I love volunteering, and why I feel this “job” is the most rewarding job I could ever ask for.
N- Wow that would do it for me! As a huge animal lover myself, that story really hits a place in my heart. I am sure our readers feel the same way. Now let’s switch gears a bit before I start to tear up. I want to know a bit more about your career. How did you get into acting?
K-I was living in Clearwater, FL and doing some modeling to make a little extra money while going to school. My older sister was a model, so I was trying to follow in her footsteps. I had no intention of getting into acting; I wasn’t even in the drama club at my high school! One of my modeling agents suggested I take an on camera improv class to get myself comfortable speaking in front of a camera, just incase I ever had to give an on-camera interview. I fell in love with it! Shortly after beginning the improv class I was asked to attend a “cattle call,” witch is basically a large casting call. I ended up being 1 of 3 out of 350 total kids that was asked to come to Los Angeles and sign with an agency. I was blown away! My parents, being the amazing people that they are, said “let’s try it…..you don’t know unless you try, and you don’t want to live your life wondering “what if”…?” So, at 16, I moved out to Los Angeles and the rest, as they say, is history.
N- Do you have any advice for new actors/actresses just starting out?
K-Best piece of advice I could ever give to someone new to this business is NEVER GIVE UP. This is a not only a business of hard work, determination and dedication, it is also a business of luck. Sometimes it’s just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Persistence is key. You have to be the last one standing.
N- Kristen, you are so down to earth. How do you manage to stay this way living in Hollywood, going to red carpet events, and signing autographs?
K-I have such an amazing family and a beautiful support system around me, it keeps things in perspective. They keep me appreciating the important things in life. My parents raised me to be a strong, caring, determined individual. It is not in my genetic makeup to get caught up in the “Hollywood” lifestyle.
N- In closing, what can people do to help that do not live in Los Angeles, and can’t attend the fundraisers like Woof and Wine?
K- Anyone can go to www.Boxer-rescue-la.com and donate through our website all year round. We not only accept monetary donations, but we also accept dog food, cleaning supplies, blankets, ect. Anything we need to keep our shelter afloat, we gladly accept. All donations are tax-deductible. We also have a medical fund for injured and sick dogs that is always looking for donations. Not only do all the BRLA volunteers thank you, but so do the dogs…because of your donations, they are able to have food and shelter while waiting to find their forever home.
N- On behalf of Modelixer, thank you for taking the time to chat with us today. Keep up the great work both on and off the screen. I look forward to seeing the new Sons of Anarchy season and hearing more of your great rescue stories!
